Become a BitterSweet Volunteer
Step 1: Call (660) 441-7713, or stop by 136 East Gay Street and pick up a volunteer application. You may download the application here.
Step 2: Meet with the BitterSweet Place program director to go over your application. You will decide together if volunteer work with BitterSweet Place is right for you.
Step 3: All volunteers will undergo a background check.
Step 4: Schedule training for the volunteer job you wish to fill.

  • If you would like to offer support by serving food on group meeting nights, by helping to set up group sessions or to clean up after the children leave, we will help you become familiar with the facility and with the specific duties that will best assist the children’s programs.
  • If you wish to offer your talents and services to help BitterSweet Place become known in the community or to help raise funds to support BitterSweet Place programs, you and BitterSweet Place staff together will decide what activities would best match your abilities and interests.
  • If you wish to become a Volunteer Group Facilitator, BitterSweet Place will arrange for you to attend the 18 hours of required training for this opportunity. The training is interactive and serves to foster the emotional growth of volunteers as they prepare to help BitterSweet children grow through their grief.

Step 5: After volunteers are trained and ready to serve, BitterSweet Place asks for a commitment of 4 hours per month (2 evenings bi-weekly) during each 8-week session for at least one year. Three or four 8-week sessions will be scheduled throughout the year.
